Why this site?

I mostly keep this site up for my own amusement and as a means to keep track of and share information about Old-time Music and Dance that interests me.  There is a vision behind the pastime however, and that is for a one stop comprehensive site on the subject.  For now I accomplish this mostly by publishing a lot of links, some with comments.  There are some other pages with longer commentary.  I hope you find it all enjoyable and useful.

The communities that evolve from regular Contra Dance events are a wonderful thing to experience.  It would be nice if there were a web that would be a similar community experience, but I'm not entirely sure right now how to go about it (or if I'll always have the time to deal with it).  Comments and suggestions are welcome.  The idea is for this site to include information on all aspects of participation (dance, music, calling), including starting and managing such events.

There are many specialized sites already in existence that would be useless to try and duplicate here.  Where is see the gap in my own searches for information are comprehensive introductions to all the topics in one place.  Wikipedia is starting to get some ground in that department, but it is not a OTMaD dedicated site.  There is an amazing resource at ContraDanceLinks.com, but it is predominantly a collection of off-site links and not really a "read all about it" kind of site.  Of course you can get just about anywhere on the Internet with Google.  These are my top three resources when looking for OTMaD stuff.

Comprehensive introductions to all OTMaD subjects, along with pages or sub-sites for dances, bands, callers and even the dancers themselves is the vision.  Time will tell if it comes into focus.
  • Proposed Site Outline - Sample Topics
    • Newcomer Introductions
      • Learn about the Dance, Music, and Calling and how it all works together, along with history, etc.
    • Group & Caller Pages
      • Web Pages for Bands, Callers, Dances, etc.
    • Dance Instruction
      • Detailed "How To", text and images
    • Music
      • How-to's and About pages
      • Collections of dance music in abc format, midi, etc.
    • Dance Notation
      • Collections of Dances, how to write dances, etc.
    • Sound
      • Procurement and Setup of equipment, etc.
    • Administration
      • Tips for the business end of it all
All of the above topics are covered on individual webs in one form or another.  But there is no single source on the web for this information.  This site would be collaborative effort, bud sits and watches bringing all these topics together in one place.

I invite anyone interested in this idea to contact me using the information here.  Other comments about the site are welcome as well.

Respectfully,
bud
